AFTER Nathan left, inside the condo bedroom, Ruby changed into her oversized sleeping shirt. She belted a light robe around her waist and glanced out the door leading to the small balcony overlooking the back of St. Dunstan’s cathedral and Gahan House restaurant.

Her hand was on the doorknob before she realized it.

She stepped out onto the small balcony. The amber glow of fairy lights strung across the outdoor patio of the restaurant combined with the scent of bright red potted geraniums and the murmur of the diners. She exhaled softly and closed her eyes. So peaceful. She found herself leaning against the wrought iron railing.

Warm summer air blew across her face and she breathed a sigh of contentment. What was it about this place that had her feeling so at home?

She pursed her lips.

She headed back to the bedroom and fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

He ran to her down the forest trail. Her heart lifted, the sting of sea salt on her cheeks, the scent of wild roses in her hair.

He neared her. She could see the shine of the brass buckles on the strap of the leather artist’s bag slung across his chest, over the forest green wool of his great coat. The coat that her fingers had brushed over many a time in these late summer evenings with the tang of salt in the air and the taste of his skin on her lips.

Oh, how she longed to stroke her fingers along the length of that strong, sturdy leather. To feel the broad width of his shoulders under her palms, the scratchy wool of his jacket, the rough scrape of his stubble against her. Everywhere.

She whispered his name, those well-loved syllables—

"Alexander," the name jerked Ruby awake. Even as she spoke the word, half-awake, half-asleep, she felt as if rust and saltwater coated her throat.

Ruby swallowed, then startled fully awake. Because in the strange manner of dreams, he had had Nathan's face.
